Subject:
Ningaloo-Exmouth Gulf must not be industrialised!
Dear Ministers Keith Pitt (Federal Minister for Resources) and Sussan Ley (Federal Minister for the Environment), and the Federal Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, The outstanding World Heritage values of Ningaloo and Exmouth Gulf make them worthy of our care and conservation, not only for their incredible natural features and biodiversity but also for their roles in supporting sustainable jobs and healthy regional businesses. I join with thousands of fellow Australians in calling for your leadership in standing up for Ningaloo-Exmouth Gulf now. We ask you to apply common sense and remove the areas adjacent to Ningaloo that have been nominated for oil and gas exploration. You should signal clearly to the oil and gas sector that it must scrap any plans it has to further encroach on the Ningaloo-Exmouth Gulf area, either with pipeline facilities or oil and gas exploration or drilling. The oil and gas industry is already on Ningaloo’s doorstep off Exmouth, and now is the moment to draw a line in the sand: Ningaloo must not be industrialised! Even before we roll the dice with oil spills or rig blowouts as have happened in our region before, scientists have long documented the damage to wildlife from intensive underwater noise from seismic exploration. Just because we can’t hear the deafening noise or see the other underwater impacts on Ningaloo’s famed marine wildlife like whales, whale sharks and turtles, doesn’t mean we should ignore the science. And nor should we ignore the science for the Shark Bay World Heritage area, Abrolhos Islands and the Kimberley, which must also be protected from these threats. Thank you for accepting this submission. I look forward to your action to ensure these globally significant areas, and the jobs and local economies they support, will be protected. Please help us protect our world-class marine heritage and the people of the Ningaloo region whose livelihoods depend on its health.
