Help us STOP plans to industrialise Exmouth Gulf!
To Hon. Mark McGowan MLA, WA Premier, Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC, WA Minister for Environment and Hon. Sussan Ley MP, Federal Minister for the Environment, I write to ask for your urgent support to protect Exmouth Gulf, Ningaloo from industrialisation. I am not a WA resident, however the Ningaloo region is a unique environment that is renowned throughout Australia and the world. It is vital we stop industrialisation before it begins so we can all enjoy and treasure Ningaloo-Exmouth Gulf for generations to come. Oil and gas multinational, Subsea 7, is proposing to build a major pipeline fabrication facility and towing operation in the beautiful, highly biodiverse and interconnected Exmouth Gulf-Ningaloo area that supports abundant wildlife and tourism businesses. Subsea 7’s proposal to assemble pipelines up to 10km long onshore, and tow them up Exmouth Gulf - dragging hundreds of heavy ballast chains over fragile habitat - and through the Ningaloo World Heritage Area, has no place here. This is a time for leadership and vision. The case for saying no to large-scale development in this extraordinary environment is clear: It is a peaceful and remote area with recognised World Heritage values, and the tourism jobs and family businesses in this region need all our support. Heavy industry in Exmouth Gulf would threaten these jobs and risk the reputation of one of Australia’s greatest natural attractions. Please don’t damage this eco-tourism destination that the world should be able to enjoy. This is the time to say yes to protection and good management for this special place. We should be doing everything we can to protect Exmouth Gulf and Ningaloo, not introducing industrial stress to this globally significant environment. Pipelines can be deployed offshore as per current practice or from appropriate, industrialised sites in the Pilbara, instead of risking Exmouth Gulf, Ningaloo. We need to strengthen the region’s eco-tourism brand and protect its precious environment so we can all enjoy this magnificent place, even from afar. I therefore call on you to stand up for Exmouth Gulf, Ningaloo - for the nature-based jobs and family businesses it supports now and into the future, and for Australia’s - and the planet’s - unique heritage.
