Help us STOP plans to industrialise Exmouth Gulf!
(and Members of Parliament), As a constituent in your electorate, I write to ask for your urgent support to protect Exmouth Gulf, Ningaloo from industrialisation. The WA and Federal Governments will soon decide whether to open Exmouth Gulf - Ningaloo’s Nursery - to heavy industrial development for the first time. Oil and gas multinational, Subsea 7, is proposing to build a major pipeline fabrication facility and towing operation in the beautiful, highly biodiverse and interconnected Exmouth Gulf-Ningaloo area that supports abundant wildlife and tourism businesses. Subsea 7’s proposal to assemble pipelines up to 10 km long onshore, and tow them up Exmouth Gulf - dragging hundreds of heavy ballast chains over fragile habitat - and through the Ningaloo World Heritage Area, has no place here. This is a time for leadership and vision. The case for saying no to large-scale development in this extraordinary environment is clear: It is a peaceful and remote area with recognised World Heritage values, and the tourism jobs and family businesses in this region need all our support. Heavy industry in Exmouth Gulf would threaten these jobs and risk the reputation of one of Australia’s greatest natural attractions. We should be doing everything we can to protect Exmouth Gulf and Ningaloo, not introducing industrial stress to this globally significant environment. Pipelines can be deployed offshore as per current practice, or from appropriate, industrialised sites in the Pilbara, instead of risking Exmouth Gulf, Ningaloo. Furthermore, there are many opportunities to strengthen and build businesses that protect and complement the region’s environmental values, rather than undermining them. I therefore call on you to take a strong position in your party to stand up for Exmouth Gulf, Ningaloo - for the nature-based jobs and family businesses it supports now and into the future, and for Australia’s unique heritage.
